Philippines Government Files Sedition Charges Against Publisher of Manila Daily Tribune
In the aftermath of the state of national emergency in the Philippines, the government has filed inciting to sedition charges against the publisher and two reporters of the Manila Daily Tribune, among President Gloria Arroyo’s major critics. Prior to the filing of the charges, police had raided the newspaper’s offices, and then asked the paper’s publisher and editor-in-chief Ninez Cacho-Olivares, to sign a document stating that “the offices have not been disturbed or destroyed, nor was anything lost or stolen.” Cacho-Olivares refused.
