French Consider Bill to Criminalize Denial of Killings of Armenians
The French National Assembly is preparing to consider a bill to criminalize denial of the mass killings of Armenians in 1915 during the Ottoman Empire. Turkey, however, has a law on its books that criminalizes the assertion that such an event can be labelled genocideevent occurred and has recently prosecuted several writers and journalists under the law. Reaction to the proposed bill is mixed. Some in the EU fear that it will cause further tension between Turkey and EU states.
