New Committee Chair Promises Re-Examination of British Editors’ Code of Practice

Across the Atlantic, the new head of the committee that puts together the voluntary code of practice for newspapers and magazines says he will review it, out of concern that reporters are inhibited from doing their jobs. Paul Dacre, editor of the Daily Mail, says after a year in which a reporter went to jail for illegally intercepting Royal Family voicemail, and “blagging”–obtaining personal information through pretexual means–became front page news, it may be time for the committee to take a second look at the editors’ code to see if it is still workable.
