National Portrait Gallery Threatens Legal Action Over Downloaded Images Uploaded To Wikipedia

Derrick Coetzee, who downloaded “thousands” of images of from the National Portrait Gallery’s website and uploaded them to Wikipedia, is facing legal action for copyright infringement. The issue is not whether the paintings themselves are copyrighted, but whether the photographs of the paintings are copyrighted, and where, and whether that copyright will be recognized under U.S. law.
