Paws For the Cause

Smithy, a two year Labrador, is attracting some bad publicity for his Twitter account. It’s really not his fault, though. He works for the West Midlands Police, and they set up his account in an attempt to publicize the work of Smithy and his human colleagues, who do crime scene investigation. It seems that Smithy’s tweets have drawn the ire of something called the Taxpayers’ Alliance, which thinks giving a police dog his own Twitter account (and keeping it updated for him–after all, paws on the keyboard can be awkward) is a waste of taxpayer funds. Maybe so. Still, I don’t know–remember McGruff, the Crime Dog? Not a real live dog, but still–pretty interesting for little crime stoppers. Perhaps real live dogs could be an inspiration too.
