The Chronicle of Higher Education has an article about how a new book on the Holocaust has become controversial. Jan Gross’s Golden Harvest, just published in English by Oxford, details how Poles assisted in the massacre of Jews at Treblinka concentration camp. The book caused a sensation at its publication in Poland last year, earning its publisher, Znak, violent reactions such as threats of boycotts and graffiti on its premises. Many Poles are unhappy about the thought of having to reassess their part in the Holocaust.
The article also discusses Mr. Gross’s earlier book, Neighbors, which told the story of the massacre of 1600 Jews at Jedwabne, Poland, in 1941, long assumed to be the work of the Nazis. In that book, Mr. Gross laid the responsibility for the massacre at the feet of the local Polish population for the deaths, an outcome that was ill-received in the country.
