Dum-da-dum-dum…dum-da-dum.Dr. Jamie Awe, described as a “real life Indiana Jones,” is suing Lucasfilm and others “on behalf of Belize” over the studio’s use of the crystal skull that features so prominently in the movie “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” In his lawsuit, Dr. Awe alleges that the studio and the filmmaker use the image of the skull without permission, and that Belize has not received any of the profits from the movie. As both Eriq Gardner of the Hollywood Reporter and the Huffington Post point out, there are a few problems with Dr. Awe’s lawsuit over a film that came out in 2008.
The film’s script changes the location of the action from Belize to Peru, although it does make reference to the skull. However, there’s a lot of doubt about whether the skull is actually a Mayan artifact as Dr. Awe claims. The skull is supposed to have been found by a member of the Mitchell-Hedges family in the late 1920s–thus, it’s referred to as the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull. However, it also seems to have been purchased at auction in the 1940s. There are questions about its composition and creation; are they really consistent with Mayan technology of more than 3000 years ago?
