Book Banning Attempts in 2016
The American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has released a list of the top ten books that U.S. citizens attempted to ban in 2016. At the top of the list is Mariko Tamaki’s This One Summer (Macmillan, 2014) (challenged for profanity and images of sexuality among other reasons). Other targeted titles include Jazz Jennings’s autobiographical I Am Jazz (Dial Books, 2014) (challenged for subject matter: it deals with the experiences of a transgender child/teen), and the Little Bill series of books, published in the 1990s by Simon Spotlight, and written by actor Bill Cosby, now accused of sexual assault. See the complete list and more about book banning in the U.S. here.
