This article provides a general introduction to image rights, also called right to one’s own image, portrait rights or right of self image and portrait. It gives a definition of image rights and analyzes their history and legal basis. It tackles some of the issues derived from uploading a selfie to social media networks and attempts to answer the following questions: Who can be the author of a selfie? What if the selfie depicts more than one individual? What are the legal consequences of the so-called “group selfies” or “groupies”?
